ByLaws

General Rules & Policies

Alcohol: The City of Laguna Beach ordinance prohibits the consumption of alcohol beverages except with a meal in Heisler Park. Open alcohol containers (glassware or cans) are prohibited within the fenced in area of the club. This includes the greens and the area surrounding the greens.

Children: Children under the age of 12 must be supervised at all times by one or more adults and will not be allowed unaccompanied on the greens or in the clubhouse.

Club Bowls: Bowls are provided to members and guests. When finished, return club bowls to the proper size shelf and in the proper bowls carrier (see photograph on carrier). They are not to be removed from the premises without prior permission.

Club House Rules: The Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Clubhouse, grounds and facilities are private for the exclusive use of its members. Members are allowed to bring guests for the express purpose of introducing them to the game of lawn bowls. Gathering for socializing is for members only. We continue to honor reciprocal use to members of other lawn bowling clubs.

Dress Code: White and or white and blue attire (club colors) is required on Saturday, Sunday, Holidays and all club tournaments.

Footwear: Footwear MUST be "smooth i.e. flat, rubber soled and heelless" in order to preserve our most valuable asset in the enjoyment of lawn bowls, our greens.

Greens Upkeep: In addition to wearing appropriate footwear, do not drop lawn bowls on the greens. When not in a game, walk on surrounding sidewalks versus cutting across the greens. Be careful when raking bowls.

Greens Use Board: Positioned under the office window, the greens use board advises which green is to be used and in which direction to bowl on the rinks. This is IMPORTANT in order to minimize wear patterns on the greens by overuse.

Guest Fees: The guest fee for a nonmember is $5 per guest. All fees are payable in the club house prior to commencement of bowling. Envelopes are provided for you to write your name and deposit in the office mail slot.

Guest Policy: A guest is a nonmember invited to bowl at the LBLBC by the club or a club member. Regardless of the number of members in a group in attendance, the total number of guests is restricted to six (6) maximum on any given day/time. Otherwise the group is defined as a Private Event, which requires board approval and adherence to our defined club's Private Event Policy. A nonmember may be a guest at the club a maximum of three (3) times per calendar year, after which the nonmember must apply and be approved to become a dues-paying member in order to bowl.

Key: Having a key makes the member responsible for the club and its contents. A member's key opens:

  • The front gate (hang the padlock on the hook inside gate around the corner under the eave by the staghorn fern),
  • The sliding clubhouse gate,
  • The clubhouse (members are responsible for monitoring non-member public entry to use rest rooms, etc.),
  • The locker room and restrooms,
  • The patio link chain lock,
  • The BBQ,
  • The rakes/jacks/mats shack (put the rakes in BACKWARDS so they don't slip).

Kitchen & Patio Area: As a courtesy, please clean up after yourself for the next member's enjoyment. If the trash cans have trash in them, empty them.

Name Badges: While at the club, ALL members must wear their name badge for others to greet and identify them.

No Smoking: Smoking is prohibited within the fenced area of the Club. This includes but is not limited to E-cigarettes, cigars and pipes.

Practice: Practice is not allowed when tournaments are in progress, unless a full green is open and available.

Private Events: Use of Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club facilities for private events by a group of 7 or more people must be submitted at least one month in advance to the board of directors for approval and to ascertain compliance with our City of Laguna Beach Agreement. Approval will be subject to a usage fee.  For more information, please consult our Private Events page.

Refrigerator Honor System: When paying for beverages that are supplied by the club, place payment into the honor cup in the refrigerator. Members please monitor any abuse of this club convenience.

Code of Conduct

The aim of this Code of Conduct is to provide an enjoyable, comfortable, safe and rewarding environment for all people associated with the club. It applies equally to members and their guests, including players from other clubs visiting the club for social or other competitions.

  • participate in an environment free from all forms of harassment and discrimination
  • have their privacy and confidentiality protected

Members may submit their views or concerns to the Board of Directors in person or in writing.

The Board of Directors will investigate and deal with concerns in a timely manner. They will advise all concerned parties of their decision, which will close the matter.

It is expected that members and visitors of the club will at all times:

  • be friendly, courteous and respectful towards other members and visitors
  • respect teammates, opponents, officials and the rules of the game
  • refrain from behavior that would bring the game or the club into disrepute

  • behave in non-violent and non-abusive ways
  • respect the positions of office bearers, committee members and volunteers of the club
  • treat the property and facilities of the club with respect

Conduct is a matter of concern to all members – poor conduct has a negative impact and can be harmful and destructive to a club.

It is the responsibility of all members to ensure that their behavior is appropriate at all times.

If a member is offensive or abusive, responding in the same manner will also be considered a breach of the Code of Conduct. The only reasonable and acceptable response is to not engage in a negative behavior. It is acceptable to report the concern/matter to the Board of Directors to be investigated under breaches of the Code of Conduct.

Any member representing the club must not engage in conduct which is violent, aggressive, inappropriate or prejudicial to the interests of the club. A member representing the club, for the purposes of this rule, is defined as anyone who:

  • is wearing club uniform or any items of uniform that identifies them as a member of the Club
  • represents the club in any bowls event
  • participates in any bowls event at our club or at another club attends such event(s) as a spectator

Any member who has indicated his availability to represent the club in organized competitions must play in the position(s) and team(s) they are selected in by the administrators of either the club or the event. Any member who is dissatisfied with a decision of the club’s selectors in relation to their ineligibility for any round(s) of any tournaments or the position/team they are selected to play in, may appeal in writing to the Chairman of the Tournament Committee or the Board of Directors.

Bowlers will show respect to their teammates, and opponents, and play the game of bowls within Bowls USA Lawn Bowling Laws, Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club Laws and associated Conditions of Play, to the highest degree of sportsmanship and honesty.

Spectators around the green will conduct themselves in a manner that ensures that bowlers are not distracted.

Members, visitors and guests will:

  • ensure that the comfort of other patrons is not unreasonably disturbed.
  • respect other patrons and will conduct themselves in a manner that will not cause offense.
  • act responsibly during any social gathering in the club house and patio areas and abide by the LBLBC Rules posted in the Club House, regarding consumption of beverages. Failure to abide by these rules may result in discipline at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

There is strictly no drinking on the grass greens at any time.

The club provides free Wi-Fi to members which is intended to be used in a fair and "community minded" manner. It is unacceptable to use the club’s Internet for any illegal or inappropriate activities.

Breaches of the Code of Conduct are to be reported to any member of the Board of Directors. Any breach of the Code of Conduct will be resolved calmly, with honesty, dignity, and as far as possible confidentiality will be maintained.

Where and when required, the Board of Directors has the right to make decisions, and enforce fair and appropriate measures, to resolve a breach of the Code of Conduct. Any reported breach of the Code of Conduct will be investigated, discussed and dealt with by the Board of Directors by imposing either a reprimand, suspension, or revoking of club membership in accordance with the Club By Laws. In the case of non-club members, the Board may consider a ban from the club for a set period of time or for life.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • How do I sign up for club events?
There are sign up sheets on the doors of the club, usually PayPal entry forms on the website. We usually send the membership an email to publicize the events and those emails have links in them to get you where you need to go.

  • Can I come down and bowl anytime?
Yes during daylight hours. Please check the calendar to determine if there is a tournament, private event, competitive bowls or social bowls scheduled.  Play is allowed during tournaments only if a green is available.  Play is allowed during Private Events, if a second green is open, but the Clubhouse will be closed to members and their guests.  Play is allowed during competitive bowls and social bowls if rinks are available or a second green is open.  After you finish bowling, the latest you can stay on the property is one hour after sunset.

  • What is check in time?
Typically 30 minutes before the start of any club event so the Game Director for that event has time to set up the game.

  • How are lead, vice, and skip determined for tournament and club events?
The Game Director for that day will determine who plays which position on which rink. Sometime it's a blind draw (which means you simply are randomly put on a rink) but the Game Director will still determine who the lead, vice, and skip will be.

  • What if I want refreshments from the fridge?
LBLBC uses an honor system and you pay for what you consume. Prices are listed on the blue can in the fridge where your payment is to be made.

  • How do I sign up for Weekly Summer Club Social Bowls and Pot Luck? And what should I bring?
You must sign up ahead of time using the reservation system. Then simply arrive ready to play. Bring something to share with those taking part in the pot luck afterwards:  an hors d'oeuvres, a salad, a protein, a side, or a dessert.

  • What is a novice?
You are considered a novice for 2 years after you join. There are several open and LBLBC novice-only tournaments and vet/novice tournaments. You can find out if you're a novice or not by going to our Compete / Novices webpage.

  • How do I buy lawn bowling clothing items?
We have dolphin club shirts for sale in the clubhouse. If you would like to have different shirts with the LBLBC logo (white for example), you can purchase a club patch for $5.00, and sew it on the shirt of your choice. For tournaments at our club you are required to wear a club or white shirt. Outside tournaments have other requirements but in most cases you and your team should “match”. We also have visors, hats, tee shirts, and measures, etc.

  • How do I begin my introductory lessons?
Request intro lessons by contacting the club via Email and we will assure that one of our Bowls USA Instructors will contact you to set up lessons.

  • How do I know what is going on at LBLBC? There are a number of calendars on the website. The Social Calendar, the  Competition Calendar, the Training Calendar, and the Special Events Calendar. All events (including events in these calendars) are present in the Master Calendar on the Club Calendar page. You can also look on the webite Home page.

  • What are Monday & Wednesday Competitive Bowls?
LBLBC organizes Monday and Wednesday bowls where members who qualify are invited to participate against and with more competitive bowlers. They start at 9:00am. Read about qualification criteria on our Train / M/W Wednesday Competitive Pairs webpage.

  • Are we allowed to have beer bottles/cans on the greens?
Please remember that the City of Laguna Beach city ordinance does NOT allow any alcoholic beverage containers on the greens. Water bottles and plastic cups are allowed on the patio and in the seating areas, but NOT ON THE GREENS!

  • Where do I get the chalk and buy my own measuring tapes?
They're stocked at the club. Come on by and buy them.

  • I would really like to become a competitive player. How do I find out about tournament play?
Check the LBLBC Competition Calendar as it lists the upcoming tournaments. Pay attention to the periodic LBLBC eBlasts. They always call out the upcoming SW Division tournaments. Visit http://www.swlawnbowls.org or check out our own SW Division & Tournaments webpage.

  • Why are private and corporate events on the calendar?
Private and corporate events support our financial presence as a nonprofit organization. Bowling and the use of our greens is a city required component of all private events. Events must be scheduled one month in advance for the convenient notification to our members. Many member volunteers help with these events. Let us know if you are interested. For more information, please consult our Private Events page.

  • Do we have a dress code?
You are asked to wear club shirts and white bottoms on Saturdays, Sundays, and for tournaments.

  • Can I bring a nonmember guest bowling?
Yes, you may bring a nonmember to bowl as your guest pursuant to the club’s guest policy.
